In Remembrance of Mom—Ida Lam

I praise God for the opportunity to share mom’s life closely in the last few months of her life – to witness first hand her trust in our Lord. Mom often told me that receiving Jesus as Savior had brought her the most joy and peace. Praise the Lord, in 2003 she converted from a Buddhist, whose source of pride was her good deeds, to a humble Christian who longs to server and glorify God. Her trust in the Lord came to a trial earlier this year when she came down with gallbladder cancer despite of the fact that she lived a disciplined “proper” life, ate a careful diet and exercised daily. Many, including her questioned WHY? It was a difficult blow to her; however, she never doubted that our heavenly Father loved her and would give her nothing but the best. She knew her life was completely in God’s hands and she lived each day by faith and drew strength from the Lord. She prayed, read the Bible, and often sang hymns to praise God. Sometimes she cried, but she reassured me those were not te

Experiencing God through caring for cancer patients

I heard a lot about how bad cancer could be but I had been living with an ill-based confidence that it would never happen to me. That was until I experienced it, firsthand, as a recent convert, 15 years ago, when it struck home showing how devastating and fearsome cancer was! With gratitude to our Lord for His healing, after surgery and in less than 4 months after the ominous discovery, my cancer episode was behind me. From then on, other than the continual yearly monitoring, I can almost keep my mind off it. However, deep inside I yearned to understand and experience the omnipresence of our loving God. I knew my motive may not be for any higher purpose other than to be convinced that at my final physical bodily struggle my loving Lord will still be there with me. Though, admittedly I also wanted to learn to care and concern for people who are in need! For more than 10 years I did not take any action on what I yearn for until a little over two years ago when my wife and I were so move

Suffering leading to grace

The saying, “When it rains, it pours.” aptly described the calamities landing on my family. In April 2008, I was diagnosed to have early stage cancer. Two days later, my father was found to have brain cancer, with an inoperable tumor. No treatment was available to him, and he was left to die. Shortly after being admitted to the hospital, he lost his mobility, and had difficulty swallowing his food. He passed away only two months later. During that time, I underwent two operations, but did not have to endure any other treatments. In my weakened state, I still had to go to the hospital every day to care for my dying father. Those were indeed very challenging days for me. I was thankful that Herald Cancer Care sent volunteer Suki to visit and care for me. She prayed for me and gave me encouragement. What moved me deeply was when Suki knelt at the bedside of my father to pray for him. Her praying from the heart touched me. I told her more than once that when I regained my health, I would

Taking the Last Steps with You

When I first met Shirley (not her real name), a 48 year-old patient, she had been in our telemetry unit for about two weeks earlier this year. She was initially admitted to the ICU with a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). Quickly she was diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized to the brain and other organs. The news came so suddenly that the total shock turned Shirley and her family’s lives upside down. Her family and doctors wanted to fight the cancer with every opportunity, but her body was deteriorating every day, causing her to lose a lot of weight and to feel weak and exhausted. As a result she needed help with her daily activities such as getting out of bed, walking a few steps, and even going to the bathroom, things that most people take for granted. Chemotherapy and aggressive treatments proved to be futile to halt the progression of the cancer. In the face of these challenges, Shirley and her husband made it known to the medical and nursing staff that the

A Purposeful Life

I was diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in November 2012 that occurs to 20% of the Southeast Asian women who don’t smoke of which I am one. At that moment, the mutating cancer cells have pervaded over 8 areas of my body and one tumor was the size of a baseball and my doctor gave me only 24-72 hours to live on that day. I was ready to let go but my husband was very sad and wanted me to fight it. With three teenagers still in the house, I prayed to a God that I claimed to know 10 years ago but had been lukewarm all these years. And God pulled me through. After 10 sessions of radiation and being put on an oral targeted drug, my cancer receded every month. I was joyous and thankful to the Lord. I understood that the Lord was keeping me alive for more reason than just letting me spend more time with my family. He has created a thirst in me for Him and the Word. I passed most of my days studying the bible, going to bible courses, attending bible study groups, reading Christian books, visi

God is real and living

The bad news hit me like a lightning on a peaceful uneventful day. During a routine physical checkup last October, the doctor announced that he discovered cancer in my body. I was advised to go through a ten-hour operation that included a special procedure of administering chemotherapy inside my body. It was to be a complex and intricate procedure even the feasibility of which was to be confirmed with a specialist. I was totally unprepared for this, and the news caused my emotion to plunge. I felt quite helpless. My emotion started a roller coaster of a journey for the next several days until I finally was ready to accept the reality. I braced myself to face the surgical treatment. I even made plans in case I did not make it through the operation. It was at that juncture that I recalled reading somewhere that Herald Cancer Care offered the caring service for cancer patients. I called them to see if they could help me. My thoughts were filled with worries about what might happen to my
